How is the healthcare in PA?

If you have a good health plan (such as "Unimed", "Bradesco" etc.) then you can find professional, good healthcare, in international standards. The public health system is very poor and whoever can afford himself, has a private health insurance.

What a wonderful site and resource. I and my family are from Porto Alegre & Rio Grande do Sul, but most of us are in the United States now. I for one am in Alaska. I will be sharing this site with my non-Brazilian friends.

Thanks for your nice words. As far as I know, the closest resorts that have nice beaches are in Santa Catarina which is around 6 hours drive from here. If you consider this as "couple of hours" then I can give more details. Dafi.
That's probaby a bit more than we are prepared to travel. What do you think of Torres? Is it worth the trip? By the way, what took you two to Porto Alegre?
Torres is ok (just ok)but I don't know of any resort there, only small hotels or rooms to let. For more details about us, email to dafibarilan at gmail.
I want to thank you for putting together a great website on POA. My family and I will travel to POA on a 2 year assignment starting this January. Do you have any advise on school's(English speaking). Also, any thoughts on safety\security for a family(wife and young child)? We're all very excited, but also want to be conscience of the reality of our move. Visiting Porto Alegre from the States at xmas and was happy to come across a site with as much info as you have, and in a language I can understand.
One question, would you recommend the need for a rental car for a visit of a week in duration? Really would like to do with out but if necessary nice to know ahead of time.

If you are planning to stay in Porto Alegre only, I believe the best solution for you would be to use taxi service. It's inexpensive and safe. I think you will find the traffic a bit more aggressive here than what you're used to and it may not be so easy to find your way around the first few days (you don't want to end up in an unfriendly neighborhood...)
If however you plan to travel outside the City (to Gramdo for example) - renting a car would be a good idea.

Hi Josh and welcome to POA,
For Portuguese lessons, you can get a recommendation for a private teacher that usually comes to your house or you can study in a language school such as Berlitz.
Another option is learn in one of the local universities - PUC or URFGS. They have special classes for foreigners and you're most likely to meet young foreign students (mainly from Asia).

In case you have a permanent visa you can also learn in the university.

The Dengue fever is in Rio de Janeiro, about 1500Km away from here. Porto Alegre is safe, Dengue wise.

I feel obligated to point out a serious misinformation found in one of your posts, Supermarket category:
-You classified Milk in Brazil A, B and C according to the level of bacteria? that is ludicrous to say the least.
-The milk classification of A, B and C milk is related to the fat content of the milk, being C the lowest in fat and A the highest.
Brazil has a very strict control over pasteurized milk and milk products.

I don't know if you live in Porto Alegre, but if you do - you're welcome to visit any of the Zaffari stores and check out the list by the milk in the supermarket fridge. It is written there black on white that the "Tipo A" milk is cleaner, bacteria wise.

Porto Alegre doesn't have any major touristic attractions but of you're asking from safety point of view - then yes, there shouldn't be a problem to visit.

I´m from Porto Alegre, but I´ve moved in Brazil seven times.
Now I´m back and happy to live in my hometown.
I´ve live in US as well and also visited other places in South America and Europe too. But I´ve never found a sunset like the one we have here by Guaiba.
So, sunday afternoon Chimarrão&sunset ... nothing compares!!!
